When it comes to the Marquise Shaped Diamond, finding the ideal, or recommended proportions is more than possible, but personal taste and the intended use for the piece are also a factor worth considering. Some prefer their Marquise Shapes Wider, or Thinner than Average. The most popular proportions are a nice balance of both, which does help the creation of guidelines to help you along.

The Length to Width ratio of the Marquise Shape is a highly valuable piece of information that indicates how plump or thick the piece is, or how thin its overall appearance will be. Generally speaking, you want the length to width ratio to be close to the 2.00 range. To simplify it, more often than not you want the length to be close to double its width. The lower the ratio, the more thick your Marquise will look, and the longer the ratio extends beyond its sweet spot the thinner it will appear.

---|---|---|---|
Length To Width Ratio | 1.85 - 2.00 | 1.75 - 1.84 or 2.01 - 2.15 | 1.65 - 1.74 or 2.16 - 2.30 |
The unique shape of the Marquise does present some worthwhile considerations. Any shape with pointed edges, when set incorrectly can be chipped and damaged quite severely. One of the best methods of dealing with its pointed edges is setting it in a V Shaped Prong which both shelters its pointed edges while maintaining a beautiful display that doesn’t take away from the shape’s natural appeal.
